Selecting Your Child Care Provider

Choosing a child care provider is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Families eligible for child care assistance choose their own child care providers from the available options:

  • Licensed child care centers
  • Licensed and registered homes
  • Listed-relative care

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Child Care Licensing regulates these child care facilities.

Relative Care

If choosing a relative provider, the following must apply:

  • Relative must not live with the child (except a teen parent’s child)
  • Must be your child’s grandparent, great-grandparent, aunt or uncle, or adult sibling. Proof of relationship may be required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must become a Listed Family Home with TDFPS Day Care Licensing
  • Providers must qualify before child care may begin.
